The idea of creating a vinotheque in Kremnica originated in 2002 when I discovered a cellar right in the centre of the town in one of the oldest and most palatial burgher houses. For previous 60 years the space was used as a store for coal, wood and “unnecessary things” (the amount of rubbish we trucked out went up to fifteen lorries). During previous years I noticed that the temperature remains stable both in summer and winter: 15?C (about 60?F). I was led to the idea of vinotheque by Vladimír Hronský’s book “Slovak Wines”. I began to see wine from absolutely different side. Up to then, like most people from mountainous regions, I had known only “sweet and dry” wines. New information and the ideal temperature in the cellar proved to be the right combination for me to start spreading and developing wine culture in and around Kremnica.
Reconstruction of the cellar lasted from September to November 2002. We began with around 80 kinds of wine; today it is more than two hundred and twenty. As time went by, I realized that I wouldn’t introduce the culture among Kremnitians by just selling wine. So we conducted a tasting room next to the vinotheque (also previously a cellar) with seating capacity of 45 people. The first tasting and, at the same time, the official opening took place on February 6th in 2003. Moldovan and French wines were tasted and the tasting was conducted by – who else? – my inspirator Vlado Hronský who wished us:
"“Let The White Stork bring the most beautiful, the purest and the most tasty wines for pleasure and satisfaction of our friends”.".
Since then we try to pursue this way and to offer only the best. Our guests already take the tastings for granted as they take place regularly every month. Apart from Slovak winemakers, vintners from abroad presented their wines here, e.g. from Moldova, France, Spain, Austria and, of course, Czech republic and Moravia. Some of the finest Slovak wine producers staged in The White Stork – Vinanza Vráble, Víno Nichta Čajkov, PD Mojmírovce, Vinohradnícka spoločnosť Modra, Víno Matyšák Pezinok, Vinárske závody Topoľčianky and others.
In this region our vinotheque is really a particularity of sorts and that’s why it was visited and approved by visitors from all around the world (USA, Canada, Japan, Sweden, The Netherlands, France, Poland, Russia, Italy, Germany, Austria and, naturally, Bohemia and Moravia.
